CSAS Knowledge Base CreationThis solution leverages the Radia AI Assistant developed by the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED). The purpose of the initiative is to create a knowledge base of CSAS publications from the last 25 years. This knowledge base would allow anyone to leverage the AI Assistant to extract trends, data, and information in such a way as to plot new visualizations by unleashing the information held within the publication repository. This initiative has a Statement of Work with ISED and it is being scoped out for amount of work and cost. All indicators to date show that this is a very workable knowledge base development.

Copilot Studio platform implementationWith the growing interest from CDOS and the rest of the department on custom AI Chat Bots and Citizen Development, there is an opportunity to increase IT enablement through the use of low code solutions. Since the department has already invested indirectly in the Power Platform, it makes sense to extend that investment into the proper implementation of Microsoft Copilot Studio which is another tool from the Power Platform rapid development platform.

Computer vision to automate fish data extraction from videoOur purpose has been to build a tool to broadly apply computer vision methods in marine research. Our work has generated several publications illustrating how we built, tested/validated, and applied computer vision methodology to collect / extract / and analyze data pertaining to marine fish in the Newfoundland and Labrador region, from video. For example, we have used it to examine the impact of seismic surveying on commercial fish in the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore. Our continuing purpose is now broadly sharing our system with commercial harvesters (fishermen), non-profit organization (AHOI), government researchers (aquaculture, MPAs, AIS), and academics (computing scientists), to collect and rapidly analyzing video data for a wide range of applications.

Clustering to characterize extreme marine conditions for the benthic region of the Northeastern Pacific continental marginWe introduce a method for characterizing extremes that uses machine learning to divide the data into regions with relatively consistent environmental conditions (temperature, oxygen, acidity), and define the extremes based on the historical statistics of variability of each of these fields. unsupervised clustering with k-means

Chumputer Vision - salmon scale age predictive AI (See B8)Deep Machine Learning and Convolutional Neural Network application for the predictive application of age assignment of Chum salmon by way of scale images. Chum salmon has been selected as the gateway species due to its relatively easy scale pattern interpretation, this will foster the pathway forward for Chinook, Coho Sockeye and Herring as future targets for AI age interpretation. Characterizing areas of convergence in the Saint John HarbourThis project is using a technique called self-organizing maps, which is an unsupervised machine learning algorithm, to identify patterns in areas of convergence near the Saint John Harbour. The preliminary analysis suggests that these patterns are related to different environmental conditions such as river discharge and tidal phase. The work has been conducted in collaboration with scientists from the Maritimes Region and is currently on hold.

Biological models to support prioritzing salmon stocks under future climatesThis project fits retrospective, life stage-specific models in a data-driven analytical framework to evaluate functional responses to climate variables across the salmon life cycle and make projections for how stocks will respond to climate change scenarios. This modelling approach is intended to be sufficiently flexible to incorporate variability in data quality. Large language models are being used to brainstorm modelling approaches and debug code. AI is not being tasked with developing these models. Large Language Models

Basic Translations & Data ProcessingWe have identified several effective use cases: Processing machine readable data into human readable formats, basic translations, and summarizing large documents and reports into digestible formats. We participated in tests of the DFO Pilot ChatGPT (GPT3) which was available prior to the DFO implementation of MS Copilot. As part of our testing, we identified several effective use cases which apply to both options since they're based on the same under
