About the initiative
Description of the initiative
The creation of a tool or system to use administrative data records to produce a clean and complete database of trip level catch and effort data.
Problem statement
Data on catch and effort is compiled from various administrative sources, with varying degrees of accuracy (estimates vs. measured values) and completeness. Data is used to manage the fishery and provides the foundation for economic, strategic policy and program analysis. Administrative records cannot be modified but a complete and accurate database is essential to support statistical and economic analysis.
Expected outcome if AI is selected
Improved data quality with fewer missing data points (missing Portland, fishing areas, etc.) and fewer errors (i.e. catch coordinates referencing points on land, landed ports in wrong region)
Risks
Having variations of the data would require users to ensure they are using the version that is appropriate for the type of work. Differences between the transformed/modified database and the original would create discrepancies between data at NHQ and regions.
