About the initiative

Description of the initiative

The initiative explores the use of Figma's AI capabilities to support user experience (UX) design activities across DFO. Figma AI features may assist in generating interface designs, creating wireframes, producing placeholder content, organizing design assets, accelerating prototyping activities, and improving collaboration among design teams. The objective is to improve productivity and reduce manual effort while maintaining human oversight of all design decisions and outputs.

Problem statement

UX designers currently spend significant time creating initial wireframes, organizing design files, generating placeholder content, documenting specs, and preparing prototypes for stakeholder engagement. Many of these activities are repetitive and provide limited value when performed manually. Figma AI may help streamline these workflows by accelerating design exploration, reducing admin effort, and enabling more time for user-centered design, accessibility, validation, and engagement.

Expected outcome if AI is selected

Success would result in a measurable reduction in the time required to create wireframes, mockups, prototypes, and supporting design documentation. The initiative aims to reduce repetitive design tasks by 25–50%, accelerate design iteration cycles, improve consistency across design artifacts, and allow UX practitioners to focus more effort on user research, accessibility, stakeholder engagement, and service improvement activities.

Risks

Potential risks include: AI-generated content may produce inaccurate or inappropriate design suggestions. Users may rely excessively on AI-generated outputs without sufficient review. Design concepts generated by AI may not fully meet Government of Canada accessibility requirements and require additional review. Risk of inconsistent outputs requiring human validation and quality assurance. Change-management and adoption challenges among employees. All AI-generated outputs will remain subject to human review, approval, and departmental governance processes before use.
